THE COLOR IN DIAMONDS
Understanding a Diamond Report …..COLOR
- The rarest and most sought after color in a diamond is the most colorless one often called ‘blue white’ or ‘Gem’ stone.
- Laboratories give different labels and values to colors, the GIA will start at the ‘D’ of the alfabet ending with ‘Z’
- The HRD follows the European ‘CIBJO’ grading system from ‘exceptional white+’ down to ‘tinted color’.
- The IGI, EGL and DIAMEXPERTISE follow basically both these guidelines.
Color classification is determined by comparing the diamond to a set of master color stones. Not all laboratories necessarily come to similar conclusions as these master stones and lighting conditions can vary somewhat. Also a color spectrum is open to appreciation depending on the eye and circumstances of observation.
